A Sexy Subject: Lightbulbs in the Closet

February 18th, 2009 by David Crickmore

I came home from work this morning thinking about electricity… and light bulbs.

Mind you, I’m a mechanical engineer.

But I did spend kid time as a card-carrying member of a national electrical club, kinda like the boy scouts, in their own way. Truth. I attended meetings. No clue what those geeks were talking about; they had electrical tape hanging off their utility belts.

I’m used to a $50 electric bill during the winter, here in Texas. (Summer? Let’s not go there.)

It’s like a break; it’s how you pay for part of Christmas.

My bill last month was $116. I can only imagine what summer will be like in this 25-year-old apartment. 2 standard sliding glass doors, 2 other drafty doors, more windows and ancient appliances! (The above-the-stove microwave is dated 1983. I have to pull-start it.)

So the best I could do was replace every light bulb with an “energy saver.” You know, instead of 60W, it’s 13W? Even the closets. The standard bulbs went into a box, for when I move out and want MY bulbs back.

Not so long ago, a “new” bulb was like 6 or 8 bucks apiece, vs. a quarter for a standard GE or Sylvania. Not anymore. The new ones are not only improved, but can be had for a buck.

Worth every penny. After all these years of using them, I’ve only seen one fail. Someone cracked it.

  2. We recently did the same thing. It had been a while since I had checked the prices on them, so we were waiting on income tax returns before we replaced every bulb in the house (I had some sitting here already for when current ‘standard’ bulbs burned out, but this was a complete overhaul). I was shocked to see that prices had gone down so much and it was certainly worth every penny.
